Applicants can file year-round.
OLYMPIA, Wash. – June 5, 2025 – Since the start of the 2025 filing season in February, the Department of Revenue has issued more than 222,000 tax year 2024 refunds totaling $163.5 million for the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC). This represents a 17.3% increase over tax year 2023’s total of $139.2 million with over six months to go.
“We’ve made incredible progress this year to get money back to working families and individuals across Washington,” WFTC Assistant Director Kevin Dixon said. “Even with this year’s record numbers, there are still more people eligible to apply, and we want to help them do it.”
While most people apply during tax season, the credit can be claimed all year. Applicants can also apply for WFTC refunds they were eligible for, but did not previously claim, for up to three calendar years from when their federal tax return was due. For example: In 2025, the agency will accept applications for the 2024, 2023, and 2022 tax year credits. Claiming all three years can return up to a maximum of $3,745.
“Tens of thousands of applicants filed for the WFTC for the first time this year,” Dixon said. “These applicants may have been eligible for prior years, and we are encouraging everyone to check and apply so they don’t miss out on all refunds they are entitled to.”
This tax season is the first time WFTC has been fully integrated with Turbo Tax. Applicants can now fully file their application using the software. In prior years, applicants were redirected to the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) website to file their application. This change is increasing participation.
About the program

The program returns a portion of sales tax paid each year and is modeled after the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is considered one of the best tools for reducing poverty nationwide.
This tax year, the WFTC team has issued $146.3 million in refunds to nearly 169,500 families with children, resulting in more than 297,151 children benefiting from the program.
