Q:  Is there a specific tax on rental cars in Washington?

A:

Yes. Cars or automobiles rented in Washington for a period of less than 30 continuous days are subject to a 5.9 percent rental car tax. The 5.9 percent rental car tax applies in addition to the applicable state and local sales taxes. Additionally, all counties in the state are authorized to collect an additional 1 percent tax on retail car rentals. Rental car tax rates vary from 5.9 to 9.7 percent throughout the state. The tax is collected by rental car companies.
