Taxable Retail Sales Decline 1 Percent During Second Quarter 2010

Retail trade up 1.4 percent

OLYMPIA, Wash., Oct. 7, 2010 — Taxable retail sales declined 1 percent to $24.9 billion during the second quarter of 2010, the Department of Revenue reported today.

Retail trade increased 1.4 percent to $11.3 billion over the second quarter of 2009. Retail trade is a subset of all taxable retail sales that includes retailers but excludes other industries such as services and construction.

The decline this quarter was modest compared to the 14 percent drop in taxable retail sales during the second quarter of 2009 and 2.4 percent decline for the second quarter of 2008.  Second-quarter sales peaked at $29.8 billion in 2007.

Overall results were held down by weakness in the construction sector, which declined 11.2 percent to $3.9 billion over year-earlier results.  Sales by new and used car dealers were up 4.3 percent to $1.8 billion, while accommodations and food services sales were up 2.4 percent to $2.9 billion.  Building materials, garden equipment and supplies sales were down 3.4 percent to $1.2 billion.
